It’s Time to Hire a Ghostwriter: Tips for Hiring and Working with a Ghostwriter

You’ve decided you’re just not able to write your book on your own, and it’s time to hire a ghostwriter.  Many people go into the ghostwriting process with no idea of what to expect or how they can help ensure that the project goes smoothly and that the finished project represents their vision.  Don’t be one of them.

Here are a few tips for making sure your ghostwriting project is as successful as possible:

  1. Make sure your personalities are compatible. Before you hire a ghostwriter, you should make sure that you have a compatible personality.  You are going to be spending weeks to months on the phone with them, and you are going to be sharing stories that can be emotional.  After many phone conversations and sharing stories of your life, you may find that you and your ghostwriter have become friends.

  1. Provide as many resources as possible. Whether you have transcripts of radio interviews you’ve done, PowerPoint presentations from speeches you’ve given, or YouTube videos you’ve created, provide your ghostwriter with as many resources as possible to work with.

  1. Make the time for phone calls. Your ghostwriter can’t write without information from you, so if you want your book written in a timely manner, make sure you’re carving out the time for phone calls.

  1. Provide recommended resources. If your ghostwriting project is going to take research, recommend books, articles, and any other resources you think would be valuable.  By doing so, you can ensure that your writer is going to use resources you know and trust.

  1. Have a clear idea of what you want your book to be about, from beginning to end. Your ghostwriter can get you to where you want to be, but they’re the navigator. You need to decide the destination points.

  1. Be cohesive. Your ghostwriter can piece things together, make them flow from one story or chapter to the next, but not if you give them incomplete bits of stories. They have not lived your life, and they won’t feel right making it up for you.

  1. Have patience! Your ghostwriter is working really hard for you. Some days, they may write thousands of words for you, and some days they may only get a few down. Ghostwriters are people, and sometimes life happens. Also, you’re looking to them for their creativity and their skills; neither are readily available all the time. They can get burnt out, too. They want to give you the best book possible, and that means they want to write for you in the best way they can.

By keeping these tips in mind, your ghostwriting project will run smoothly, and the finished product will represent you and your vision.  If you are interested in ghostwriting services, please contact britt@atlargepr.com to set up a call.
